"This body of work emerged from a deeply personal space, one where light, movement, and colour became the language through which I could externalise emotions that often remain unspoken. What began as a visual exploration of emotions quickly transformed into an introspective journey— one in which intangible emotions would be given shape in visual form. The photographs are not mere representations of the external world; rather, they serve as reflections of inner states, shifting moods, and fleeting mental landscapes.
For me, photography is not just a medium but a conduit for self-expression—a way to explore and cope with complex emotions such as grief and anxiety. It has offered a way to confront and articulate emotions that I have long suppressed, allowing them to take form through light and abstraction.
In this particular project, there was no attempt at photographing reality, no engagement to deal with external narratives or to capture events in real-time. I deliberately rejected the impulse to rationalise or dilute my emotions, resisting any urge to shape them into coherent stories or socially acceptable sentiments.
Instead, I took a raw, instinctual path—one that was openly self-centered, introspective, and cathartic. By refusing to filter my emotions through reason or convention, I sought to create an external manifestation of my internal world—an imprint of feelings that often go unacknowledged. This project is a testament to the validity of personal experience, a visual reminder that what I create through my camera is - at least for me - real."
Beatrice Morel
Beatrice Morel (b.1970, France) is a self-taught artist whose diverse portfolio spans oil painting, acrylic painting, sculpture, pottery, and photography. She is also a keen Ikebana practitioner, having graduated from Sogetsu School of Tokyo in 2011.
An extensive traveller since very young, she has been living abroad for the past 28 years and her life in France, USA, India, Belgium, Ireland, Japan, Greece, South Korea and Singapore has strongly influenced her projects which explore cross-cultural blending and global perspectives with diverse audiences.
She lives and works now in Singapore and focuses on photography. As with her painting, her photographic practice takes the road of abstraction, which gives boundless territory to express and distil emotions and ideas. Her latest project started as an attempt to use the camera and the light that passes through it as a paintbrush and as a means of emotional processuality, which involves capturing the power and immediacy of raw, unedited emotions at a given moment. To make her photographs look like a painting in-camera, she combines a low ISO setting, a slow shutter speed and camera shake.
Beatrice is also working as a freelance curator (She graduated from NTU’s MA in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices in 2020). She is a founding member of the Of Limits Collective, a Curators Collective which aims to tread diverse perspectives in discussing various subjects – from socio-political pulses and tensions to interactions and the creative synergy between communities.
